De kust van de Ria de Aveiro wordt aangeduid als "Het Portugese Venetië". Het is gevormd door een delta rijk aan vissen en zeevogel. Vier hoofdkanalen stromen door verschillende eilanden en eilandjes bij de monding van de Vouga, Antuã, Boco en Fontão-rivieren. Sinds de 16e eeuw vormde deze vorming van smalle uitzichten een lagune, die, door zijn kenmerken, de vorming en productie van zout mogelijk maakte. Het werd ook erkend door de Romeinen, wiens legers zijn zout naar Rome exporteerden (toen gezien als een kostbare hulpbron).
