Het Estaus-paleis op het Rossio-plein in Lissabon was het hoofdkwartier van de Portugese Inquisitie. Het oorspronkelijke paleis werd rond 1450 aan de noordzijde van het plein gebouwd als onderkomen voor buitenlandse dignitarissen en edelen die Lissabon bezochten.
In 1536, tijdens het bewind van koning Johan III, werd de Inquisitie in Portugal ingesteld, en het paleis werd uiteindelijk de zetel van de instelling. Het paleis had een gevangenis en tribunaal waar de beschuldigden van ketterij, hekserij en, in het bijzonder, het in het geheim beoefenen van het joodse geloof, terechtgesteld, vervolgd, gefolterd en geëxecuteerd werden. Het Rossio-plein en het nabijgelegen plein van St. Domingos werden vaak gebruikt als decor voor openbare executies. De eerste officiële auto-da-fé vond plaats in 1540.
