De eindronde van het Europees kampioenschap voetbal werd in 2004 gehouden in Portugal, van 12 juni tot en met 4 juli. Het was voor het eerst dat Portugal het EK organiseerde. Zestien landen speelden in groepen en finales in tien stadions verdeeld over acht steden.
Het toernooi werd op 12 oktober 1999 toegewezen aan Portugal. Dat gebeurde tijdens een bijeenkomst van de UEFA in Aken. De andere kandidaten waren Spanje en de combinatie Oostenrijk en Hongarije. De aanwijzing van Portugal kwam als een verrassing. Algemeen werd verwacht dat Spanje de beste kans op de organisatie zou maken. De veertien leden van het Executive Comité oordeelden anders. Alle kandidaten hadden eerder op de dag de gelegenheid gekregen een toelichting te houden van een half uur.
