De berg Dzhimara was de oorzaak van een ramp op 20 september 2002. Meer dan 100 mensen kwamen om het leven toen hun dorp werd weggevaagd nadat de bergtop instortte. Meer dan 100 miljoen kubieke meter puin legde een afstand van 20 kilometer af. De opwarming van de permafrost zou hier deels de oorzaak van zijn geweest. The NewScientist noemde deze gebeurtenis een vroeg teken van klimaatverandering.
