Mount Dzhimara was the cause of a disaster on 20 Sepetember 2002. More than 100 people were killed when their village was swept away after the peak collapsed. Over 100 million cubic metres of debris travelled 20 kilometres. Warming permafrost is thought to have been partly to blame. The NewScientist mentioned this event as an early sign of climate change.
