In een afgelegen gebouw in het National Institutes of Health bouwde onderzoeker John Lilly een isolatietank waar hij mensen instopte en die hij afsloot van enige zintuigelijke prikkels. Hij stopte ze in een badkuip (gewichteloosheid), afgesloten van lichte en geluid. De meesten kregen na een tijdje hallucinaties. Later zouden bedrijven dit soort isolatietanken gaan verkopen als ontspanningsmiddel.
