Dit is het dorp waar de "Legende van Sleepy Hollow", geschreven door Washington Irving, zich afspeelde. Het dorp heette oorspronkelijk North Tarrytown, maar men dacht terecht dat een hernoeming naar Sleepy Hollow meer toeristen zou trekken.
Een van de hoofdpersonen was Katrina Van Tassel (Texel), gebaseerd op een echte persoon, Eleanor Van Tassel, een persoon van Nederlandse afkomst, meer precies van het eiland Texel in Nederland.
Ook de moeder van de auteur Washington Irving was van Nederlandse afkomst.
