Description

Op 30 april 2007, bijna precies 500 jaar na de creatie van de kaart, werd de Walseemüllerkaart overgedragen door de Duitse bondskanselier Angela Merkel en wordt nu bewaard in de Library of Congress. Het staat bekend als de eerste kaart die de naam "Amerika" droeg. De kaart werd in 1507 gemaakt door de Duitse cartograaf Martin Walseemüller in het kleine Franse stadje Saint-Dié in de Vogezen. Hij maakte de kaart na vele jaren van opmerkelijke ontdekkingen van de wereld door mensen zoals Columbus, John Cabot, Bartolomeo Dias, Vasco da Gama en Américo Vespucci.
