Deze meren spelen een belangrijke rol bij het ontginnen van kaliumchloride of potas uit een ondergrondse aardlaag. De vijvers bevatten potas pekel. Als het vijverwater verdampt vertonen de meren een levendige groene of blauwe kleur. De kleur weerspiegelt de fase van verdamping. Delen met de donkerste blauwe kleer zijn meren met het diepste water. De rijke blauwe tint komt van de kleurstof die wordt toegevoegd om de snelheid te versnellen waarbij water zonlicht en warmte absorbeert, om zo de verdamping te stimuleren. De naam potas verwijst naar plantenas die in water in een pot werd geweekt. Deze techniek werd gebruikt om kalium meststof te vervaardigen voor het industriële tijdperk. De omgeving van het meer zijn de woestijnen van het Colorado Plateau.
