De albatros is een heel bijzondere vogel, een symbool voor Hawaï en een symbool van monogamie. Zoals Lucy Cook in haar boek Bitch beschrijft, leven albatrossen zestig tot zeventig jaar en paren ze doorgaans elk jaar met dezelfde vogel, hun hele leven lang. Toen Laura Bush Hawaï in 2006 bezocht, prees de Republikeinse First Lady de albatroskoppels omdat ze levenslange verbintenissen met elkaar waren aangegaan. Wat niemand, en Bush al helemaal niet, op dat moment wist, was dat meer dan een derde van die toegewijde koppels, om het antropomorfisch uit te drukken, lesbiennes waren.
