The Schelphoek
We've been cycling through the Schelphoek for a while, but did you know that this area has a special history? The Schelphoek was formed during the flood disaster in 1953 due to a dike breach. This dike breach was eventually repaired by constructing a new dike. Since the flood disaster, the area has become a creek area and is managed by Staatsbosbeheer. They have planted a forest here in recent years. This has now become a home and breeding ground for about sixty different bird species such as owls, nightingales, and great spotted woodpeckers.
Additionally, the inner dike creek almost never freezes in winter due to the salt present in the water. This means you can even find the smallest grebe species on the water in winter, namely the little grebe. Outside the dike, you will find thousands of coastal birds in spring and summer.
Take a look at the observation tower; which bird species can you spot?
