Villa Schlikker

The Villa Schlikker at Steinstraße 29 in Schüttorf is a listed building from 1903. It was built as a wedding gift for a wealthy young couple.

The textile manufacturer Herman ten Wolde gave the villa to his daughter Ida and son-in-law Ludwig Schlikker as a wedding gift. With this marriage, ties were forged between two families who had earned their wealth in the textile industry: Schlikker & Sons, a general partnership, had been based in Schüttorf since 1868. At that time, the owners and authorized signatories were Gerhardus Schlikker and his sons Hermann and Edo Floris. Before this OHG came into being, Gerhard Schlikker had run a manufactured goods trading business in Schüttorf and traded in linen and half-linen, which he initially had produced at home. Later, he began the factory production of these fabrics. The fact that he had specialized in linen and not switched to cotton benefited him and the entire Schlikker family at the time of the Civil War in America. At the time of the construction of the villa, the Schlikker & Söhne spinning mill in Schüttorf was run as a limited liability company and there were numerous other companies in Schüttorf and the surrounding area in which the Schlikker family was involved.
