Ermita de San Pedro - Ubrique - Andalusia

The Ermita de San Pedro is a unique building of neoclassical architecture that stands out in the Sierra de Cádiz.

At the turn of the 19th century , living conditions were precarious , combining the shortcomings of the socio-economic structure with an unfavorable climatic situation. The lack of optimal hygienic and sanitary conditions facilitated the progress of the epidemic that was then ravaging the area.

A landowner from Ubrique, Pedro Romero Montero , owner of farms and livestock, had provided the means to finance a small hospital . For this purpose he had bought some houses in the street and Plaza del Perdón. Here he had the Hermitage of San Pedro built . In his will of November 20, 1803, he provided for the use of the building as a primary care facility and also fixed the endowment for the medical staff and promised to pay the costs of medicines.

This work was also intended for Catholic worship . Pedro Romero died in 1804 and was buried in the same chapel. But this function also ceased. The building became the property of the municipality. At the end of the 19th century, the building was used as a public school.

At the end of 2008 , a project was submitted for the refurbishment of the Ermita de San Pedro for use as a plenary hall of the town hall of Ubrique and as a venue for civil marriages.

The works carried out restored the original volume and morphology of the building , demolishing the existing stairwell and mezzanine, restoring all exterior and interior elements and eliminating all pathologies.
