The village of Baarle consists of the Dutch municipality of Baarle-Nassau and the Belgian municipality of Baarle-Hertog. Together they have 30 enclaves. These are areas that are completely surrounded by the territory of another state. Contrary to what is often thought, Baarle is not located on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands, but rather in the middle of the triangle formed by Breda, Tilburg, and Turnhout. The Belgian Zondereigen and the Dutch Ulicoten and Castelré are also part of Baarle. In Baarle, the border is thus an arbitrary construct. It runs through streets, houses, and gardens in a winding manner. In the center of Baarle, the enclave borders are visible through special paving slabs and aluminum signs in the pavement. House numbers are displayed with the national tricolor of Belgium or the Netherlands.
