De culturele dimensie van Eisenach zit m deels elders, in de middeleeuwse burcht Wartburg, boven op de heuvel Wartburg. In de dertiende eeuw werd hier de jaarlijkse Sängerkrieg gehouden, een concours voor zangers-dichters. Richard Wagner vereeuwigde deze wedstrijd in de opera Tannhäuser. Luther werkte er aan de Duitse vertaling van de Bijbel.
