Start/Finish: Gargellen Travel Guide

Gargellen, the highest village in Montafon at 1423 meters, near the Swiss border.

At the end of a steep winding road, at the foot of the imposing Silvretta massif
lies the village of Gargellen, in the back part of a green valley with fir forests and hay meadows, which
are full of flowers in summer.
Above the village, the gray gneiss peaks of the Rätikon group, the Rotbühlspitze and the Madrisa rise into the sky.
High in the sky, the observant viewer has the chance to see the impressive golden eagle, and since its reintroduction in 1985, the ibex can also be spotted in the mountains around Gargellen with a bit of luck.

On a hike in Montafon, you not only progress steadily but also ascend.
On paths that were already used by smugglers and on which farmers have been bringing their cattle to summer pastures for centuries, one can swing out from the village in all directions toward mountain passes like the St. Antönier Joch, Schlappiner Joch, and Vergalda Joch.

In Gargellen, you are constantly confronted with borders, whether it is one of the many border crossings to Switzerland or your own state border during one of the many hiking tours...

We took these 2 short walks to acclimatize.
In the mountains, we get less and less oxygen per breath the higher we go. That’s why we get tired faster at the beginning of a mountain vacation. Give your body time to adjust to the thin mountain air.
Take it easy for the first 2 days, look around, take a short walk, and you will see that the longer mountain hikes will come naturally and be fun!
