A statue of "Karelke Waeri" stands near the entrance of the Saint-Jacobschurch.
On the top of the statue you see the folk-singer Karelke Waeri and around the pilar, several scenes of his songs. The statue is made by Walter De Buck, who also wote the Ghent national anthem called 'the Kite" or Het Vliegerke'.
This statue was set up in honor of the first Ghent Festival of Walter De Buck, one of the pêople who started up the revivial of the Ghent Festival in the '70s.
Karel Waeri was a popular 19the centruy folksinger. He was not much larger than other half meter, he couldplay a bit of violin and he had a bad voice, but Karelke was a real phenomenon. Dressed to kill, he made a ritual and show of each performance.
