Hotond Mill

In 1684 there was already a post mill on this site. In 1697 Pieter Mortroye sold the "hoothontmolen" with the adjoining yard to Amant Declerck van Zulzeke under certain conditions. At the beginning of the 19th century, the stake mill was replaced by a stone ground sailer, fitted out as a grain and oil mill. The mill was ravaged by lightning in 1845 and again by fire in 1910, but was repaired each time. In 1910 the oil hammer was removed. Shortly after the Second World War, the mill was shut down and dismantled. The interior fittings were removed except for a few stairs. The heavy whitened hull was made into a watchtower, as a tourist attraction at the inn "De Hotond". The mill is located at 150 m above sea level, the highest point in East Flanders.
