Westkerke

Westkerke is a village in the Belgian province of West Flanders and a district of the city of Oudenburg. It was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. Situated on a sand elevation, Westkerke is an old settlement that early on split off from the parish of the nearby Roksem. Westkerke served as a base for the land reclamation of the lower-lying land and for sheep farming on the salt marshes. The patronage rights of the parish were held by the St. Bertin Abbey in Saint-Omer. The St. Peter Abbey of Oudenburg and the Templars also had properties there.
