In the middle of this altar stands St. Apolonia, worshipped against toothaches and oral diseases.
"St. Apollonia was born at Alexandria (Egypt), and was persecuted and imprisoned at the time of Emperor Decius because of her Christian beliefs. The executioners threatened to burn her alive if she would not speak ungodly language with them. She broke free from the hands of the executioners and, inwardly filled with the Holy Spirit, spontaneously jumped into the fire that had been lit for her. This happened around the year 249 AD.
According to tradition, she was knocked out of her teeth during the torture. Thus she became patroness of dentists and is worshipped for toothaches and headaches.
In folk art she was represented with pliers in which a tooth is encased. The feast day of St. Apollonia falls on February 9.'
