At this crossroads hangs a curious toponym wax that could possibly be linked to Halle as a place of pilgrimage. Sandwich, known to us as a slice of bread, would have been named according to VERBESSELT after a span with that name that was here. From here the pilgrims saw the church tower of Halle and took a final rest.
There is also another theory that ties in with GYSSELING which says that a ham refers to a headland in a damp piece of land or to a bend in a river. In the case of our Sandwich and the lower grounds, the soil consists of fertile loam deposits on a slope that slopes gently towards the stream valley and ponds. According to that statement, the toponym does not refer to our daily breakfast or the place where it was available. The name butter can indicate the good quality and high fertility content of the surrounding soil. This can be compared to the English butter toponyms in which the same quality indication resounds. The name butter may also have something to do with the color of the sand or vegetation. Let's stick to a quality indication of a rich soil on lower soils where loam and humus, washed off from the slopes, form a fertile layer.
