Anti-aircraft battery Grossherzog I was established on November 24, 1914, at the oyster pits "Stichert-Stracké & Cie". By December 2, the guns were ready for action. They had to protect the workshops for submarines against allied air attacks.
In June 1917, the battery was completely dismantled, and the four guns were moved to Bredene. They were positioned in the area located east of the windmill of Henri Hubert and west of the farm "Turkeyenhof". The battery provided protection to the mobile battery "Preussen" established in the "Turkeyen" district (Groenendijk).
In October 1918, the battery was partially evacuated. On October 16, Belgian soldiers found only two sabotaged anti-aircraft guns.
Battery Grossherzog II had four pieces of anti-aircraft artillery of 8.8 cm (8.8 cm S.K.L./45). Each piece was installed on a concrete platform 5 meters wide and protected by a spherical steel armor. The guns were grouped in pairs with a concrete ammunition bunker in between them.
