Brussels City Hall

Rogier Van der Weyden is one of the Flemish Primitives from the 15th century, a contemporary of the brothers Van Eyck. He was born in Tournai as Roger de la Pasture. He worked there for many years in the workshop of his master Robert Campin. His most important work is "The Descent from the Cross". In 1435, Van der Weyden became the city painter in Brussels. He worked for many years on the justice panels for the new city hall, but that unfortunately was lost in the French bombardment of 1695.
