Tongeren was located on Niederstrasse, which ran from Aachen to Santiago de Compostela via Maastricht, Brussels and Paris. The city was, as the oldest Marian pilgrimage site on the northern slope of the Alps, an important stopping place. With its many monasteries, it also gave pilgrims safety and shelter. During this walk you will follow in the footsteps of pilgrims on their way to Santioago de Compostela.

The village of Rutten is known for the annual Sint-Evermarusfeesten. Evermarus was a pilgrim who, on his return from Compostela, was murdered with his companions by the thieving knight Hacco and his gang in the woods around Rutten. Evermarus was considered a martyr and canonized. In 968, the tomb of Evermarus was found, and then a chapel was built on it. The annual commemoration of May 1 consists of a pilgrim's mass, a procession with horses and the game of martyrs. In this game, only the real Ruttenaren play a role, and robbery and murder are depicted. In 2017, the mystery game was recognized as intangible heritage. It is the oldest mystery game still alive in Belgium.
