Vesparit 'The White'

The White is a youth work by Ernest Claes, based on the childhood and mischievous antics of a village boy from Zichem and the often harsh reactions from adults in his surroundings. The White is Claes's best-known and most popular work. The novel was only completed and published in 1920. It has been filmed twice: in 1934 by Jan Vanderheyden (The White) and in 1980 by Robbe De Hert under the title The White of Sichem.

The character chosen by Claes as the archetype for his story really existed. The story mostly takes place in and around Zichem at the beginning of the 1900s. Ludovicus 'Lewie' Verheyden is a nine-year-old boy. He lives with his mother, father, and two brothers on a farm in Zichem.
