Warmbeek Valley - theme - 1.8 km

Come climb and scramble on the Beaver Path! Explore the beautiful Warmbeek Valley in an adventurous way. Cross the brook via an exciting rope course, discover the aquatic life in the pond, and relax on a comfortable bench while enjoying the tranquility and the view over the blueberry plantation. Along the way, you'll learn all about the animals and plants that call this valley home.
The Valley of the Warmbeek
The Warmbeek springs in Peer, twenty kilometers to the south, and flows through Hamont-Achel, with a drop of 9 meters over a distance of 8 kilometers. At Sint-Huibrechts-Lille, the brook crosses the Bocholt-Herentals canal and changes its name to Tongelreep at the Dutch border, eventually flowing into the Dommel at the Genneper Parken in Eindhoven.
In the past, the meanders of the Warmbeek at Achelse Kluis were straightened and dike-reinforced to drain the water faster. Thanks to recent re-meandering, this area now acts as a natural water buffer, where the river is allowed to flood during high water levels.
Between Tomp and Mulke, the riverbed was diverted for the construction of a mill pond of about 7 hectares, essential for the operation of the watermill during dry periods. In 2015, fish ladders were installed at the former watermill the Mulke, allowing fish to swim upstream to their spawning grounds again. Upstream from the fish ladder, a 'spawning riffle' has been created, ideal for rare brook fish such as the chub and the brook lamprey.
