With Rüdlingen, Buchberg forms an exclave of the Canton of Schaffhausen on the Rhine, bordered by the Canton of Zürich and Baden-Württemberg.
Buchberg is first mentioned around 1111–24 as Bochberg. In 1236 it was mentioned as Buchberge.
It was bought by the city of Schaffhausen from Rheinau Abbey in two portions, in 1520 and 1657.
