Fort Foppa Grande

The Foppa Grande Fortress is a Swiss artillery work on the southern side of the Gotthard Pass in the canton of Ticino. It is located at an elevation of 1540 m above sea level at the entrance to the Tremola on the old Gotthard road above Motto Bartola. The facility built in 1940 was declassified in 1997 and restored and renovated in 2003 as the Historical Site Foppa Grande.
In 1929, Italy built a road to the San Giacomo Pass, which is only 14 kilometers away from the southern portal of the Gotthard Railway Tunnel. The heavy artillery of the Italian forces moved there, bringing them dangerously close to the central Gotthard fortress. It was deemed urgently necessary to reinforce the fortifications built from 1886 to 1894, namely Forte Airolo, Fortress Motto Bartola, and Fort Hospiz, which had become outdated.
