Linderhof Palace

Building and renovating remains a favorite pastime, even for kings and princes. Take Schloss Linderhof, the royal villa of Ludwig II and the only castle actually inhabited by this eccentric king. The Bavarian king Maximilian II, Ludwig's father, purchased the original hunting lodge in the mid-nineteenth century. In the gardens, there are all sorts of kitschy buildings, such as the Swan Lake, the Venus Grotto, and the Moroccan house, where the reclusive king could completely indulge himself in his undoubtedly rich fantasy world.
