This church looks centuries old, but was only completed in 1905. Nevertheless, it appears quite authentic. The style in which it was built is referred to as 'neobaroque,' and indeed, simplicity is not evident in the design and execution. The German architects of the time were fond of drawing inspiration from examples in Greece or Italy from a few centuries earlier. The influence of the climate gives a unique effect to the Cathedral: the green-tinted copper, a Marten Toonder effect. The interior of this church, according to some seasoned 'churchgoers,' can be compared to the most beautiful churches in Europe. The entrance is not free.
The typical thing is that the architectural style of the Cathedral is truly Catholic, but the church was intended for the Protestants. By the way, there has been a church building on this site since 1750; what we see here is partly built in 1816, restored in 1981, and renovated in 1993. It's a pity that the modern Dom Aquarée had to be built right up against it.
