Charlemagne's court is likely located here in Ingelheim am Rhein, near Mainz on the Rhine, although this location has become symbolized over time as the central power of the Carolingian Empire. This is also where the story of Karel ende Elegast, one of the most famous Middle Dutch chivalric tales, is set, and is part of the Flemish literary canon .
