The Gildehauser Venn is a diverse moor and heath area. On the edges there are pine forests and grassland complexes of varying intensity of use and isolated arable land. It is the best developed complex of moor heaths and nutrient-poor heath ponds in Lower Saxony with occurrences of numerous endangered species.

In particular, the area serves to protect and promote the value-determining FFH habitat types such as bog forests, old acidic oak forests, strandling and dwarf rush vegetation, nutrient and alkaline, moderately nutrient-rich and dystrophic still waters, dry and moist heaths, moist tall herbaceous meadows, transitional and oscillating grassland bogs as well as peat bog Schlenken with beaked reed communities. Here, for example, rare and endangered dragonfly species or the frogwort (Luronium natans) occur as a value-determining plant species.

A flatter drifting sand elevation cuts through the moor into a northeastern sub-area, which is more characterised by bell heath moorland and natural still waters, and into a south-western sub-area, which is more characterised by moor grass stands and peat cuttings. The many bodies of water in the area have partly developed into wind blow-out troughs, so-called Schlatts, or have emerged from former peasant hand peat cutting.

The buffer zone surrounding the core area consists of forest stands, agricultural land and fallow land and serves the core area as a hydrological protection zone to avoid drainage and to protect against nutrient inputs. The extensively used grassland areas are important as breeding habitats, especially for meadow breeders.

The NSG serves to protect the FFH area 060 "Gildehauser Venn".

The district of Grafschaft Bentheim is responsible as the lower nature conservation authority.
