The area is located in the river landscape of Eider-Treene-Sorge, covers an area of approximately 620 hectares, and has been part of the FFH area 1622-391 "Moors of the Eider-Treene-Sorge lowland" since January 2010, thus designated as a Natura 2000 area. In April 2016, a management plan for the preservation and development of the habitat types there was established for the sub-area NSG "Dellstedter Birkwildmoor" by the Nature Conservation Foundation Schleswig-Holstein on behalf of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Areas. It consists of the two separate remnants of raised bogs, the Nordermoor and the Ostermoor, as well as the surrounding wet meadows. The peat has a thickness of up to six meters in some places. The moor is named after the black grouse, which was once present in very strong populations here but has disappeared as a breeding bird since the early 1980s. Large parts of the area are now owned by the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association and the Nature Conservation Foundation Schleswig-Holstein.
