House Rauschenburg

The Rauschenburg is an abandoned moated castle in the Lippe meadows on the outskirts of the small town of Olfen in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Coesfeld. Its name may derive from the eternal murmur of the former rapids at this point in the Lippe.

The manor of Rauschenburg was first mentioned in 1050, and the first owner was a bailiff of Bishop Ludwig Landgrave of Hesse from Münster in 1317. In 1322, the Bishop of Cologne, Heinrich von Virneburg, and the Bishop of Münster concluded a treaty in which it was decided to build a bridge over the Lippe at the Rauschenburg. In 1444 and 1498, this contract was reconfirmed by the sovereigns of the time.
