Low water lock Magdeburg

The low-water lock Magdeburg is a structure that was built as part of the Magdeburg waterway junction. The lock facility is located at Rothensee on the Steinkopf island and serves to maintain the water levels in the Rothensee connection canal and in the Magdeburg harbor at a high level year-round. It is operated only during low Elbe water levels and is open for free passage during higher Elbe water levels. The operation enables the maintenance of a water level of about four meters. The useful length of the lock is – similar to the Rothensee and Hohenwarthe locks – 190 meters. The usable chamber width is 25 meters. Next to the lock, a pumping station has been constructed to maintain the water level and for the operation of the lock.
A very similar facility had already been started before the Second World War. The two lock basins are preserved a few hundred meters further south at the industrial harbor.
