Uetersen Monastery

The Uetersen Monastery in Uetersen, Schleswig-Holstein, was founded in the 13th century. The building ensemble is one of the most significant cultural monuments of the Pinneberg district.

In the Middle Ages, two castles of the knights of Barmstede stood near the current monastery area of Uetersen. The remote location was the "uterst End", the outermost end of their dominion.
In 1234, Heinrich II of Barmstede designated his property at the marsh edge as a spiritual foundation. He summoned twelve Cistercian nuns from the Reinbek monastery. Thus, a Cistercian women's monastery was established at the "utersten End". The monastery church was consecrated, like all churches of the Cistercian order, to the Virgin Mary as patron and in addition to Saint George. In 1424, the monastery with its first church was destroyed by fire, but was rebuilt by 1440.
