Water tower Rostock

The municipal water tower of Rostock stands on Blücherstraße, not far from the Rostock main train station. Built in 1903, the water tower is one of the significant historical buildings of the city and is a listed monument. The elevated reservoir in the tower served to store large quantities of water as well as to maintain a consistent water pressure in the water supply network.
The polygonal base is made of natural stone, while the structure is made of brick. Following the base is a circular shaft that tapers towards the top. The use of glazed bricks gives the smooth wall decorative stripes that rise diagonally in the lower area and form a zigzag pattern above. A frieze with a cross pattern encircles the shaft like a belt. On the front side, the frieze is interrupted by a coat of arms mosaic, which depicts an earlier version of the Rostock coat of arms, showing the Rostock griffin standing upright. Round arch arcades form the transition from the shaft to the area of the elevated reservoir, where the tower widens. The casing of the reservoir is elaborately designed and incorporates decorative elements reminiscent of brick Gothic architectural forms: Seven copper-tipped turrets form the upper termination. In between, six gable elements with pointed-arch blind niches create the impression of church windows. The elevated reservoir functions as a steel tank that holds 800 m³ of water.
