Forest Cemetery Oberschöneweide

The Forest Cemetery Oberschöneweide is an urban cemetery in the Berlin district of Oberschöneweide in the Treptow-Köpenick borough. It was established in 1902 on the orders of Emil Rathenau, a co-founder of the General Electric Company, by Max Stutterheim as a churchyard on Waldstraße. Only since the completion of the Wuhlheide People's Park has it had the address An der Wuhlheide 131 a.
The cemetery, originally covering an area of 1.02 hectares, was a gift from the manufacturer Emil Rathenau to the rural community of Oberschöneweide. Rathenau also financed the construction of the cemetery chapel and a residential building for the cemetery caretaker. The inauguration of the municipal cemetery took place in February 1903 on the occasion of the burial of the Royal Forester Franz Witte, who had lived on Siemensstraße. The architect and master mason Max Stutterheim was chosen for the planning and construction. He had geometrically arranged burial plots created and the southern side prepared for family graves. The cemetery chapel, built of brick in the style of medieval chapels, was not completed until after the cemetery’s consecration in 1903/1904. In 1908, the municipal council decided to expand it for the first time, and in 1920 it received additional areas for the fallen of the First World War. It currently occupies an area of 57,338 square meters. The entire facility, including the administrative buildings and the chapel, has been under monument protection for several years, as well as a number of particularly outstanding tombs on the site.
