The nature reserve is located east of Schlangen and belongs to the Paderborn highland. The terrain is characterized by its incised dry valleys. The stony, calcareous soil is covered by a thin layer of earth. In the center of the nature reserve lies a small mixed forest of oaks, ashes, and spruces, along with a woodruff beech forest on the southern slope. The surroundings are characterized by arable land, meadows, and pastures.
