Thekla Shaft

The Thekla shaft was an underground and at the same time deepest winding shaft on the Rosenhöfer Gangzug near Clausthal-Zellerfeld.
In the middle of the 19th century, the need to replace the old, tonnage shafts of the Upper Harz mining industry with new, more segregated shafts was recognised. In the meantime, the maintenance of the old shafts had become very cost-intensive, especially since progressing to ever greater depths required complicated extraction procedures. From 1868 onwards, the Ottiliae shaft was sunk as the new main winding shaft and the existing ore barge production on the Tiefer Wasserstrecke was extended to the new shaft.
