Haltern Tank

The Haltern Dam (officially: Stevertalsperre Haltern or Talsperre Haltern) is a dam near Haltern am See. It was built between 1927 and 1930, contains 20.5 million cubic meters of water and is owned by Gelsenwasser AG. The Stever and Halterner Mühlenbach were dammed.

The length of the dam is 1300 meters, the height 8.9 meters. The overflow structure is a 130-metre-long spillway. Originally, the reservoir was much smaller with a capacity of four million cubic meters; It was increased to 20.5 million cubic metres in 1972. The reservoir consists of two sub-basins, the north basin and the south basin. In the northern basin, there is an island with a size of about 30 hectares.

Nearby, about two kilometres upstream on the River Stever, is the Hullern Dam.

The dam is a drinking water reservoir and supplies more than one million people with drinking water in western Münsterland and northern Ruhr via the Haltern water supply plant. However, the water is not taken directly, but in the form of seepage water and filtered groundwater. Therefore, recreational activities are allowed on the tank. The 8.3-kilometre-long circular trail around the lake is very popular with walkers and joggers.
