The mill from the Huning farm in Vreden-Ammeloe was built in 1811, the year in which trade freedom was introduced in Prussia, by the couple Hermine Huning, née Essling, and Johann Bernhard Huning. It was located until 1978 by the Huningsbach, which was relocated during the land consolidation process. This is the last watermill in Vreden.
The building has one and a half floors and is equipped with a hipped roof. On the middle floor, there are the two milling sections, each with two grinding stones made of Eifel blue basalt. Since around 1900, the mill has been powered by a turbine, which operates more effectively at low gradients or changing water levels than a vertical water wheel.
Until after World War II, the mill tirelessly ground grain. Afterwards, the half-timbered building increasingly fell into disrepair and was only used as a storage room for junk. Frost damaged the masonry, and rain attacked the beams. When the Huningsbach was finally relocated, the mill was seriously threatened by the lowering of the groundwater. The local history and antiquities association decided to take action in 1991.
