The village is located about five kilometers south of Betzenstein and is situated at an altitude of 529 m above sea level.
The original name of Riegelstein was Raupersdorf. Hans I. der Türrigel initiated the construction of Riegelstein Castle. His sons referred to themselves for the first time in 1403 as “Tyrrigel zum Riegelstein,” also Türriegel or Dürriegel. Thus, the village received the name: “Riegelstein.” The Türriegel were ministerials of the Counts of Reicheneck and detached themselves from the Counts with a considerable estate around Riegelstein. From 1403 they were allodial. Around the year 1500, Heinrich VI. was not only a tournament knight in Ingolstadt, Bamberg, and Würzburg but also a full-time steward at the castles of Stierberg and Betzenstein.
