Already at Groß Liedern it becomes noticeably quiet, and you can focus on riding your bike and the landscape. The roads become narrower and some gentle hills remind you that the last ice age shaped the "Uelzener Basin". A few villages later, near Soltendieck, the scenery changes. It becomes noticeably more wooded and hilly. An ideal habitat for red and fallow deer, which also like to cross the rarely traveled roads during the day. Here, in the immediate vicinity of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the well-secured border of the GDR used to run with control strips, electric fences, and self-shooting systems. The "German Unity" museum in Bad Bodenteich still reminds of this time. The traces have largely disappeared on site. Instead, the remains of another border can be found directly on the road towards Schafwedel: In the Middle Ages, walls were built, a "Landwehr", to force traders onto certain paths and to collect tolls.
