Filsø Ellipsen round

Filsø hosts an incredibly diverse birdlife, which is a major attraction for many visitors. Breeding success for large rarities such as the sand martin and the common goldeneye has drawn birdwatchers to the area. Prominent breeding birds such as the sea eagle, crane, bittern, marsh harrier, curlews, gull, and tern colonies leave their mark on the Filsø area. Other interesting breeding birds include bluethroat, double-banded plover, bearded tit, numerous pairs of nightjars, and red-backed shrikes. As the reed grows, one can also experience the “black sun” of starling flocks at Filsø.

Several hundred thousand birds pass by Filsø each year on their migration routes, and the recreated lake with its fox-proof bird islands has become an important resting place for both geese, ducks, swans, and flocks of lapwings. Local ornithologists closely monitor the development of birdlife in and around Filsø.

Filsø is today a habitat for more aquatic plant species than any other Danish lake. Over 50 species have been found on the bottom and along the shores of the lake, including some of Denmark's rarest aquatic plants – also species that grew in the former lagoon at the site 200 years ago.

In the lake, populations of perch, pike, eel, roach, and bream are developing, and on the grasslands around Filsø and Fidde Sø, many birds of prey, amphibians, insects, and other small animals thrive. Especially at Petersholm, herds of red deer can often be seen, curiously observing visitors and helping to graze and keep the grasslands around the lake open.
