This building was inhabited by three generations of the Columbus family. Its construction began at the end of 1510 and in 1512 Don Diego Colón, viceroy of the Indies, third governor of Hispaniola and son of the discoverer of America, was already living there.
The Alcázar is a rectangular plant of two levels and was built with coral stone from the quarries of Santa Barbara.
It is currently a museum related to the viceregal period in the Dominican Republic.
