Santa Maria de Porqueres is a 12th-century Romanesque church located in Porqueres on the western shore of Lake Banyoles in Catalonia. It is considered by many to be a jewel of Romanesque art in Catalonia. Santa Maria of Porqueres represents an almost ideal example of Romanesque church architecture in Catalonia. For this reason, the church was awarded the label "Monument of National Importance" by the Spanish state. The church of Santa Maria de Porqueres is located on a narrow hill on the western shore of Lake Banyoles. This location was chosen by the first settlers to prevent flooding of the residential area and the church. The first mention of a church on this site dates back to the year 906 AD. The present church was consecrated on April 5, 1182.
