Descripció

Located in Plaza del Triunfo, nº 1, the former headquarters of the Provincial Council of Seville, also known as Casa Palacio, it enjoys a privileged location in the most emblematic district of the city of Seville.

The building, whose origins date back to the 14th century , is strategically located in the monumental space bounded by the Reales Alcázares, the Cathedral and the Archivo de Indias.

The building was part of the Old Hospital of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, which is adjacent to the Reales Alcázares and whose foundation dates back to the 14th century. Also known as the Hospital del Rey or Hospital Real , it was not really a health institution, but started as a hospice for pilgrims and was later used as a poorhouse until 1795, when it was sold after being incorporated into the Hospital de Inocentes. Nothing is known about its later use and construction work until 1839, when González León mentions that the house "was rebuilt with a colorful facade of balconies and windows, and was one of the best in Seville".

Subsequently, the Provincial Council of Seville purchased the building in 1927 to use it as an institutional headquarters and it underwent major renovations until 1929 to adapt it to this purpose, designed and led by the architect Antonio Gómez Millán. Since then, the building has undergone various architectural and urban development interventions.

After the Civil War, it was expanded to include the adjacent plot of the Monastery of the Encarnación, corresponding to what is now the Torreón part of the main facade. In the 1950s, the City Hall opened Romero Murube Street on the adjacent property, exposing the walls and parapets of the Reales Alcázares and giving the house a new facade on the south side. In the 1960s, the attic floor of the main facade was built, which includes the mansard roofs that now tower over the Plaza del Triunfo.

The Provincial Council of Seville moved to its new headquarters (Avda. Menéndez Pelayo, 32) in 1994 and a year later the first phase of renovation work began on the building for the installation of the Casa de la Provincia Autonoma , which was officially inaugurated on September 20, 1999.
