Metzeral, the oldest village in the Grande Vallée, with 1109 inhabitants, has a rich history. It was first mentioned in 817, and its name probably derives from the Latin word for "small dry-stone wall". The village gained autonomy in 1801, and prospered in the 19th century thanks to the textile industry. A victim of the First World War, Metzeral is now a tourist center, notably with its "Valon" spring water bottling plant. The Emm church, erected in tribute to the dead of the 1914-18 war, is a place of pilgrimage. The "Chêne Millet" military cemetery is a reminder of the ravages of war. The region offers a wide range of walks around emblematic sites.
