The siege of Fougères took place during the Hundred Years' War. The town, taken by surprise by the English, was then besieged by the Duke of Brittany's troops in 1449. This battle ended the truce between France and England that had lasted for four years.
In 1449, the kingdoms of France and England had been at peace since 1445. The Duke of Brittany, François I of Brittany, was then a vassal of both the King of France and the King of England. However, his brother, Gilles of Brittany, leader of the pro-English party, opposed him and attempted to win over the King of England. The duke had him arrested on June 26, 1446. This imprisonment outraged King Henry VI of England, who demanded the prisoner's release. Finally, after three years of fruitless negotiations, King Henry decided to attempt a coup by taking a Breton stronghold in order to demand the duke's release of Gilles in exchange for the return of this stronghold.
